         The Hurstville city library has a number of modern approaches which are in line with modern web 2.0 technologies. The primary web 2.0 technology is the online searches which are performed by library patrons. However alot of patrons do not seem to be interacting with the library in a knowledgable way. By this I feel the patrons are spending time spending time online but they are not really understanding the concept of searching for information within the library, and spending time reading and developing their own thinking and cognitive abilities to both source and analyse the information they are seeking.
        The education for all library patrons is a necessity as many coming into the library do not have the skills to access the internet. Showing patrons how to link to libraries such as the state library of NSW would be of an advantage when patrons are doing online searches. Hurstville library have an online assignment equiry service, as well as an email enquiry service for libray customers. Library customers can send there own emails for a fee, but the use of the online facilities is free
        The library website gives information on these services, with information on the libraries child, junior, and adult collections.As well there is a linking to the museum, which is in close physical proximity to the library, and their collections are closely monitored and advertised by the library. Several library publications note any new activities in either the library or the museum, and these are on public display in the library.
       As this library is a municipal library and not an academic library the use of web 2.0 is not overly accentuted, but it is there for those wishing to make use of this technology. Facebook , Myspace, and other social networking tools will have a necessary role to play in the library, largely because of the learning needs of a very large proportion of the library patrons, students.

               The Hurstville city library has web 2.0 facilities available for its reading public with the use of the internet, and their access to other features such as podcasts. The online access is the major use of web 2.0 within the library, with library patrons completing their own online searches within the library.
             The childrens section within the library has its own catalogue, and within this most fields of knowledge are covered. Childrens reading material is in abundance as is a playing area and childrens educational toys.
             The junior fiction area covers books which would be for recreational use, and copies of school books and fiction texts which may be used at school. There are books covering the core areas of the curriculum, i.e. books covering all subject areas
            The adult fiction has a comprehensive collection of contemporary and classic authors. Books which are popular in contemporary fiction cover most of the major genres, including science fiction, mystery, romance and adventure. These books are kept on the shelves for the general public to use for recreational reading.

  Hurstville library is a large municipal library catering to local municipality. Recent figures state 40    of the libraries users are from overseas. The library has a number of shelves with books in a foreign language. Apart from these there is an adequate reference section, online computers, archived newspapers, study area as well as the general library itself housing a large selection of books and DVD's 

Activity 7

With 500 million users worldwide, facebook is a very large social networking site. Its use by youth culture is in a way that allows the development of a culture of facebook users. They were spaces to mark identity and socialize with peers.Gossiping, flirting, joking around and hanging out were all skills that were used in this forum. Parents concern was that these arenas were unchartered territory, and there was not alot known about the boundaries or implications of this technology. Research is quite recent on this topic, but a noticeable study has concluded that self preservation, peer socialbility, and negotiating adult society are three primary reasons why young people use facebook. Its continued use will be studied with interest in the future.

Activity 6

Ferrari and Library Hayles were two blogs that I viewed, both were well structured and thoughtful. Library Hayles suggestions about social networking well thought about. Ferrari background colours and patterns also portrayed a quality of rustic learning,and set a mood for the blog.

Investigative Exercise 7

The podcast I have located was found at the state library of N.S.W. with the content dealing with a series of lectures delivered at the A.N.U. on by guest lecturers on a variety of topics.
This series of lectures were found at ANU lectures (podcasts) [electronic resource].

Investigative Exercise 6

A review of the listed book is provided by the library. I feel this is a good idea because it introduces the ideas about the book to a reader.
By clicking on the title of the listed books that were under review on this website, a fuller book record was found. We could then complete a google search on this book to find further reviews if required.
The State library of NSW has online reviews through magill on line or google searches which are a full review on any books of interest. The Hurstville city municipal library does not have a review of books, so it is up to the reader to do a google search on the text.

Activity 4 -rearranging design elements

This activity was interesting if only because I lost one of the gadgets and went through alot of techno-computer work to find it again. But once the skill is mastered you can have some interesting arrangements on your blog

Activity 3- changing colour of blog

The colour changes applied to the text only on my blog, and the colour changed from a light blue text to the light tan text. This was achieved by navigating through the design tab on the blogger dashboard.

Activity 1 Inserting an image into a post

This is an image of a laptop I found on google, as a practice activity for transfer of images to our blogs.The image was saved and inserted via the link icon.  Success it worked.

Libraries as a social networking site-exercise 5

Libraries offer social networking through their facebook and my space pages. With vast numbers of people using the library as a resource there are certain to be a variety of skill levels within the libraries users. The use of eletronic media is also on the increase.  If the library has adequate facilities,and provides training in these media then they should also be available to the public for social networking.

Exercise 4 Library story time session-Youtube

This is a short clip, 3 minutes 21 seconds of a Rapid City Rush hockey team member, reading the childrens book, "Zachary and the championship at a Rapid City public library short time session..The story is clearly read, with intonation and voice characterisations, by a team member of the Rapid City Rush Hockey team. After an introduction from a librarian, the audience of young children and family members are very attentive, and the addition of a costumed donkey, make the storytime session a success.The site for this you tube on the library story time session can be found at  http://www.youtube.com

Exersise 1

This exercise asked us to comment on blogs already created by various groups, those being Sydney Institute of Tafe, Blue Mountains Local Studies Group and Parramatta City Library. Of these three I chose the Sydney Institute Blog to look more closely at.
 The online subject guides information is relevant, as there is a new guide beginning on library and information services, the course I  and many others are currently enrolled in.  Information on a new database called Emerald, National child protection week 2010, Ultimo College Health Expo 2010, new photography and manga books in the library, as well as Innovation Showcase for Sydney Institute, created necessary informaton for those studying at ultimo tafe.

FIRST POST

Blogging seems to be a useful tool in which information can be shared. A bank of knowledge and exchange of information can be achieved by posting information and asking others to contribute or comment on information or content you have posted on your blog. For our purposes blogging is seen as a useful tool for librarians, as it allows information to be exchanged, and a personalised log of informaion can be maintained. The broad term for this technology is Web 2 which also includes wikis, podcasts, flickr and You Tube.Blogging allows the participation of others people through invitation to that persons blog.
